The call was worth the wait.
The Baseball Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday its four-player class for 2019 with former Yankees closer Mariano Rivera becoming the first player to be voted unanimously into the Hall of Fame. Rivera will be joined by Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina and Roy Halladay posthumously.
But for Martinez, the vote came on his 10th and final year of Hall of Fame eligibility. When that phone finally rang on Tuesday, the longtime Seattle Mariners DH and third baseman was on the verge of tears.
The Mariners front office watched the announcement on the videoboard at T-Mobile Park (formerly Safeco Field), and everyone was predictably pumped.
Congrats to Martinez.
Worth the wait.
